How to test ignition coils

Preparation for test ignition coil

The first thing I do is always take precautions. When working near or around a running engine should be very careful. You should be aware of loose clothing. If you have long hair that you want to be careful who has no contact with any part of your engine car and its moving parts.

Test the ignition coil of your car is much easier task to perform. It is not as complex and require special tools or equipment. One thing to remember is that your ignition system generates a large amount of electricity. If something goes wrong, the result could be very dangerous. Proceed with caution.

If your battery has been removed from his vehicle, data that needs to be more specific on your ignition coil, you can perform what is called a test. Configure the test by removing the wire the candle from its socket. Then, remove the spark plug with a socket. Now you want to connect the plug to spark plug. To do this, carefully, you do not want anything falling into the hole Spark or have a problem.

Test the ignition coil: The test:

Take a pair of pliers isolated. Keep your spark plug wire with pliers isolated. Now you need a point of grounding to look around your engine one. You want a place that is easily accessible and exposed metal. You can even use the engine of this car.

Attach the spark plug wire with pliers isolation and contact your point ground chosen by the threaded portion of the candle. Having someone start the engine of his car and be careful with candles. If you are looking for a blue spark jump over the gap – of electricity. If you can see the blue spark, even in broad daylight, then your candle works well.

Test the ignition coil: The test meter

There are a number of other Tests can be made for the ignition coil. However, if you want information specific information about the condition of your ignition coil, you must perform a test of the meter. This test is more accurate to determine whether or not you have to change the coil. It is considered the only proper test for a coil.

You can rely to some extent in the bright blue spark that you see on your bench, but if you spark is low and their eyes can not say that this part "> candle can cause your vehicle improperly or wrongly, that the last anything you want.

Come inside the ignition coil for a moment. The ignition coil has two coils of wire that are just above the other. We refer these coils in the windings. A primary winding, the first cable, and a secondary coil, the second cable. The primary winding includes the power to create the spark. The secondary coil is sent to the broker. It is possible that one of these windings cause malfunction of your car ignition coil to fail. Sometimes, an ignition coil can fail completely which means that does absolutely no spark whatsoever.

A test is performed with a multimeter the ignition coil completely disconnected. This counter numbers expected to help determine the status of the coil – much more reliable than a visual assessment. There are different types of multimeters digital and can be found online or at your local automotive repair.

Of course, to use the meter, you need to know security requirements your ignition coil. If you do not know what then refer to your vehicle's service manual or repair of information.

To test the primary winding of the ignition coil:

As mentioned above, the primary winding of the ignition coil is initially on electricity or the battery voltage of the car. Did you find the specifications for resistance to ignition coil? You need this before the test meter. If you do not have to take a moment to find the service or repair manual information.

Once you have found the security requirements to locate the digital multimeter. If you have a traditional round coil, must use the meter and place the son in the small posts on the outskirts of the ignition coil. If you have a new units closed, then place the cables on the poles of a sign or a mark of its coil.

Note the meter reading obtained. If you read the meter in the range as specified in the manual, then its primary winding is working well and you can continue to check the secondary coil. If you find that reading is even slightly outside the range, then you need to replace the ignition coil.

To test the secondary coil of the ignition coil:

The secondary winding of the ignition coil sends the spark to your dealer and candles. A spark weak or no spark all is an indication that the coil must be replaced.

To test the ignition coil is secondary, connect the probes of the outer pole 12 V post and center of the ignition coil. The center pole is where the main cable that connects the distributor. Again, make sure that the reading fall within the range indicated as described in the manual for your car. If your battery falls within this range is all well. If the reading is expected to decrease slightly outside the range specified, then you need to replace the ignition coil. Remember that an ignition coil will not cause your engine malfunction and may cause other problems too.
